Our bees live in backyards just like yours! If you are interested in hosting two honeybee colonies, please contact us and we would be happy to see if your yard would be suitable.
While this list is not exhaustive, here are some of the things we are looking for in a beeyard:
-Bees like to be in direct sunlight as early and as long as possible
-On a hot sunny day the bees will be very active flying in and out of the hive. They won’t hang around the yard, but there should be a place where their flight path won’t bother you (or your neighbors).
-Convenient access to the hives. We carry equipment (often heavy) to and from our car so a clear path to a parking space is very helpful. Back alley parking is ideal. We try to check on our bees every one to two weeks during the height of the summer, less in the spring and fall. In the winter the bees just hang out and eat honey, so we’d only check on them on an exceptionally nice day in late winter to make sure they still have enough supplies.
-The bees will find flowers to go to wherever they are (especially in the city) so it’s not essential to have bee plants are in your yard, but of course it is encouraged!
